Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare but serious condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves. It can cause sudden muscle weakness, numbness, and even paralysis in severe cases. GBS can affect people of all ages, but it often follows an infection like the flu, a stomach bug, or a respiratory infection.
At our center, we provide timely, expert care for Guillain-Barré Syndrome with the goal of stopping the progression of the illness, managing symptoms, and helping patients recover strength and function.
In GBS, the immune system attacks the protective covering of the nerves (called myelin), which disrupts the signals between the brain and muscles. This can lead to:
Weakness in the legs or arms
Tingling or numbness
Difficulty walking or climbing stairs
Pain in the back or limbs
Trouble breathing or swallowing in severe cases
The symptoms usually appear quickly—over days or weeks—and require immediate medical attention.
The exact cause of GBS is unknown, but it is often triggered by:
A viral or bacterial infection
Recent surgery or vaccination (very rare)
COVID-19 or other recent illnesses
It’s important to remember that GBS is not contagious, and early treatment can make a big difference in recovery.
Diagnosing GBS involves:
Physical examination to check reflexes, muscle strength, and symptoms
Nerve conduction studies and EMG to measure nerve activity
Lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to detect signs of nerve inflammation in the spinal fluid
GBS is a medical emergency that needs hospital care. We focus on stopping the immune attack and supporting the patient’s vital functions.
IVIG (Intravenous Immunoglobulin): A treatment made from healthy antibodies that blocks the harmful antibodies attacking your nerves. It’s given through a drip over a few days.
Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis): This procedure removes harmful antibodies from the blood and is especially helpful in the early stages.
Supportive Care: This includes breathing support (if needed), pain control, and monitoring heart and lung function.
Both IVIG and plasmapheresis are equally effective—your doctor will choose the best option based on your condition.
Recovery can take weeks to months. Most people get better, but some may have long-term weakness or nerve pain. We provide full rehabilitation services, including:
Physiotherapy to regain muscle strength and coordination
Occupational therapy to help with daily activities
Speech and swallowing therapy, if required
Our specialized team is trained to handle GBS from early diagnosis to recovery. We provide:
24/7 monitoring and emergency care
Experienced neurologists and therapists
Personalized recovery plans
Emotional support and family counseling
Guillain-Barré Syndrome can be frightening, but with fast and effective treatment, many people recover fully. We are here to help you or your loved one through every stage—with care, compassion, and expertise.
